Ghost ant and whitefly control for Largo homes

Tiny pale ants on the counter by the sugar bowl, a sticky film on the car parked under the oak. Largo homes see the same two pests over and over, one inside and one out.

Short answer

In Largo, tiny ghost ants are one of the first indoor ants we check for, and rugose spiraling whitefly is the big outdoor pest. Ghost ants nest in wall voids, behind cabinets and in potted plants, and baits work well against them. Rugose whitefly has spread countywide on gumbo limbo, coconut palm and live oak, leaving honeydew and sooty mold.

Local conditions

Ghost ants indoors and whitefly outdoors in Largo

Largo counted 82,485 residents in the 2020 census. Inside those homes, the ghost ant is one of the small ants we look for first. UF/IFAS calls it one of Florida's most important household ants, common through the central and southern parts of the state. Workers are tiny, with a dark head and a pale, almost see-through body, so they seem to vanish against a countertop. Colonies nest in wall voids, behind cabinets and baseboards and in potted plants, and they go for sweets. Baits work well against the wall-void colonies, which is why we skip the spray can and place bait where the trail starts.

The yard is a different story. UF/IFAS Pinellas Extension reported rugose spiraling whitefly spreading countywide on gumbo limbo, coconut palm, live oak and other hosts. Whiteflies feed on the undersides of leaves and drip honeydew, and black sooty mold grows on whatever sits below, from parked cars to pool screens and patio furniture. Treating the host plants is what stops the drip. Ficus hedges have their own whitefly, confirmed in the county in August 2009. We check which trees, palms and hedges carry the heaviest load, treat those, and let the mold weather off once the honeydew stops.
