Asian subterranean termites and mosquitoes in South Tampa
Swarmers around a porch light on a warm March evening, and a big oak in the yard that sounds hollow. South Tampa has a termite that, as far as anyone knows, has not spread farther north in Florida, and it eats trees as well as houses.

South Tampa is where UF/IFAS confirmed Asian subterranean termites in March 2023, the northernmost known infestation of this tropical species in Florida. Researchers warn the colonies can hollow out large, healthy trees as well as damage houses. We inspect the house and the big trees close to it, and we explain what we find before recommending treatment.

Old houses, old trees and a new termite in South Tampa
Hyde Park grew in the 1880s after Henry B. Plant bridged the Hillsborough River at Lafayette Street, and its first house went up in 1882 on Morrison Avenue. Historic homes and bungalows still line those streets. In March 2023, UF/IFAS confirmed Asian subterranean termites established in South Tampa, after Hillsborough pest control operators sent samples to the UF termite ID service, and researchers think the infestation began 7 to 10 years earlier. This species swarms in March around sunset on warm days, so swarmers that month deserve a call.
In the South Tampa neighborhoods we have figures for, most homes are owner-occupied. Palma Ceia has 1,786 owner-occupied homes, 80.1% of the total and the highest share on our list, with a median build year of 1973. Beach Park sits at 69.4% with a 1978 median, and Ballast Point at 53.7% with a 1986 median. Shaded, mature yards matter for mosquitoes too. On Oct. 5, 2026, Hillsborough aimed dengue aerial treatments at South Tampa and Davis Islands, and the county says to empty and scrub water-holding containers at least twice a week.

Ask us on the phoneNo. They attack houses as well, but researchers single out how they hollow out large, healthy trees, so we check trees next to the house as part of the job.
In March, around sunset on warm days. Formosan termites follow from late April, and drywood swarmers fly from March to June.
Published Florida figures put a one-time subterranean treatment at $1,500 to $3,500. We inspect first and quote before any work starts.
Tenting is for drywood termites spread through the framing. Asian subterranean termites come from the soil and are treated with liquid or bait instead, so the inspection decides which applies.
Aerial spray reaches adult mosquitoes in flight. Emptying and scrubbing pots, saucers, pet dishes and toys at least twice a week removes the eggs it cannot reach.
